Panathenaic amphora with runners, Attica, Greece 540–530 BC

The Panathenaic Games wereheld in honour of the godess Athena in Athens. Winners received a large jar of sacred olive oil with the goddess Athena on one side and an image of the event they had competed in on the other. Here, three youths compete in a foot race.

EASY

Metrological relief, marble, Aegean, 450 BC

This stone carving probably hung over the entrance to a weights and measures office in the marketplace of a Greek city. It shows the upper part of a male body. Each part – the hand, arm span, footprint and hole where the fist would have been – represents a different unit for measuring goods.

MEDIUM

Shoemaker Vase, Attica, Greece 500–470 BC

This unusual pot shows a scene from the everyday life of a shoemaker who cuts a leather sole around the foot of a customer. Underneath the table is a bowl of water for softening the leather before cutting it. The cobbler's knives are on the shelf above.

DIFFICULT

Cast of Nike, Olympia, Greece c. 425–421 BC

This is a plaster cast of a statue showing Nike, the Greek goddess of victory with an eagle at her feet. The original statue was made from marble from the Greek island of Paros. It was found broken off its tall pillar near the Temple of Zeus in Olympia.

Theseus and Minotaur on an Amphora, Greece, 550–530BC

This pot shows a dramatic scene from the Cretan myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. Surrounded by onlookers, Theseus prepares to cut off the Minotaur’s head.

MEDIUM

Stamnos with a symposium scene, Greece 480–460BC

A symposium was a drinking party held by wealthy Greek men at home. The guests lay on couches eating food and drinking wine mixed with water. Conversation topics included philosophy, politics and gossip. There were musicians, dancers and poets to entertain the guests who sometimes became more rowdy as the evening progressed.
